How to keep Facebook traffic stable?

For a while now I've been running a viral blog about uplifting stories, animals, photography and such. It has over 90k fans, most of which were bought directly from FB and I had some big hits where my traffic jumped to over 160k visitors a day. The only thing is that it's never very stable and my traffic can drop from 160k to just 10k visitors a day. I get a good response from most of my posts and I'm seeing 100s of shares, but it doesn't always translate to fans actually visiting the site. I've got a relatively big ad budget to work with but I never get any clear results and it always feel like it's just a matter of pure luck.

So my question is if anyone has experience with running facebook ads successfully and what is the key to keeping the traffic stable? Should I buy likes or is promoting posts the better option? Also what is the most effective way to get traffic to a site by promoting posts?

Starting a group would be your best bet on keeping traffic and funneling them to your actual website.

Groups is probably one of the least used but most powerful facebook tool available because tons of people spend more time in a group then they do on their own pages. Plus you build that community feel that people enjoy having with companies very quickly .

Thanks, I will definitely try that, but since my page already has over 90k fans, I am wondering how to get the best result from it by using facebook advertising.

Post New Story once every day on Facebook page. Boost the Post that does well and reaches more people.

AFAIK posts never reach the entire fan base, facebook always reduces post's reach,
Thus you better turn some of your advertising money into paid posts.
Schedule a few and see how that works for you and move from there.

I know, we usually reach about 10% if we're lucky. The thing is I don't mind spending some money on advertising, but I tried boosting/ promoting posts for say $12 a day and it didn't do much traffic wise. We did get some posts go viral with over 300k shares, but the weird thing is that we didn't even promote those articles, it just sorta happened. Like I said, I've been doing this for a while now with some success but it still feels like it comes down to luck more than anything else, making it extremely hard to sustain stable traffic from FB.

It's luck man, you can't predict how viral an article will be. Learn your demo, learn what they like the most, and post more of that. If you want to spend money, once you find that sweet spot target as close as you can get to that audience with that sort of content. Even then it'll all come down to chance, but with slightly better odds. It's all about giving your audience what they want. Then even if shares aren't high you'll at least have a somewhat decent CTR on posts.

Its always new content and regular post is what makes the difference.

Boost the already well performing stories.

From experience I never even got close to 300k shares on one story. It sounds like you hit the nail right in the head. My page is the same size as yours. If you'd like to discuss ideas pm me your skype.

I agree it probably comes down to luck. However, I noticed that the reach is a lot more important than the number of likes/ shares. I always thought a lot of likes/ shares automatically means a high reach, but I got posts with just 50 likes that get over 40k reach and I have posts that get 1k likes/ shares and only have 10k reach.

So basically what I'm trying to do is get maximum reach out of everything I post. Everybody says FB is now a pay to play ad platform and I don't mind spending some bucks on promoting/ boosting articles. The only problem is that doing so doesn't seem to do much. I mean I boost a post for $14 a day and I only see like 700 paid reach and thousands of organic reach.

What I'm wondering is how other sites manage to get a lot of stable traffic from FB and if anyone has an idea how much I should spend on promoting posts to reach all my fans (almost 100k).
