2 ways work great for me to increase groups:

1. You can promote giveaways, connect to a vendor related to your niche and offer them traffic from your group exchange to giveaway. "invite 3 friends to enter the giveaway".

2. "Spam" competitor groups with a link to your group, don't pure spam, give a value with a link.
