Well first consider, do you want an authority site or just increase your Domain Authority?
If you want to just increase your Domain Authority, my advice is to not care about it. It is a metric invented by MOZ, not a metric Google counts.
If you want to build an authority site, my first bit of advice is to stop caring about Google for a little bit. Instead, build your brand up. Go to every social networking site and start a quality profile, go to every niche relevant forum and start a profile, fill the about me sections with good content about your site, use your logo on them, do a true introductory post, no backlink, no spam, just a post about you, your site, and your goals for being there. Search out niche relevant directories, get listed. Claim your brand EVERYWHERE.
Now go through the list, find the best properties for your niche. image heavy? Better be active on Instagram, Twitter, pinterest, tumblr. Video heavy? Better be active on YouTube, vimeo, Facebook. So, now be active, be engaged on the most relevant platforms. The rest? Use IFTTT, use an autoposter plugin, keep them active with content, but don't be engaged. Speaking of IFTTT, start a branded WordPress, Blogspot, Tumblr, syndicate your content(I use partial snippets and encourage click through).
Now you're on your way to being an authority site. Now start building links, be a bit aggressive on link building for certain posts, build backlinks to forum posts you make, build backlinks to your forum profiles that have d0follow links. Be confidant in your branding, and push your brand out there, getting Google to your site and let Google figure out what your site is about. Now, I'm not saying don't do keyword links, or long-tail links, or LSI links, do those, but also do a fair amount(25-35%) as your brand, I mean heck, if your pages are set right, naked URLs should include the keyword as well.
The best strategy is really only the one for the end result you want.
