How to improve copywriting?

Power Words:
  • Power words make you a better copywriter and increase your conversion rates. That’s because language can change how people behave. Specific words can motivate them to click, share, download, sign up, fill out, keep reading and best of all: BUY.
  • Use only when necessary and do not go overboard!

WIIFM - What’s In It For Me?
“People aren’t interested in you. They’re interested in themselves”
--Dale Carnegie
  • Basically the question everybody has in their heads, when they’re reading your copy.
  • WIIFM is a UNIVERSAL truth you can apply to pretty much everything you will ever write again.
  • Applying WIIFM to your copy, puts you in your customers shoes.
  • So when you’re writing your copy, use less of the we language, things like ‘we are, we believe, we will’ and substitute it with more you language, like “you’ll get, you’ll find, you can”... that kind of thing.
  • Applying WIIFM to your copy, puts you directly in YOUR CUSTOMERS SHOES. So you can more easily write for their needs and wants.
  • The truth is that people don’t care about the actual product or service… nor do they care about the features or technical specifications… they only care about what it can do for them, and how it can make their lives better.. In other words the RESULTS.
  • Sell the result not the product.

How to use Emotion to Motivate your Reader
“Emotions are the fire of human motivation, the combustible force that secretly drives most decisions to buy. When your marketing harnesses those forces correctly you will generate explosive increases in response.”
--Gary Bencivenga
  • We don’t buy things because we NEED them, we buy them because we WANT them.
  • That’s because wanting is a natural human impulse – In fact, One Harvard study says 95% of our buying decisions are made subconsciously.
  • It’s why someone buys a brand new car, that depreciates in value the moment it drives of the forecourt, instead of buying a perfectly good second car. It’s the same impulse that drives us to wear make-up, nice clothes, and buys new iPhones. We don’t NEED any of these things, but they appeal to our inner craving to look attractive or higher status.
Example of emotional copywritingExplanation
Everyone has big dreams, grand plans and things they say ’One day’ to. And everyone
wants to make sure their money Is working just as hard as they are, to make these
dreams a reality.
Notice how the copy isn’t talking about interest
rates
or banking terms and conditions… it’s all
about making you, the reader feel INSPIREDmaybe
even a little EXCITED.

Writing as you speak
  • Writing in a conversational tone changes everything. And it’s the only way you’re going to get people to read and absorb what you are saying.

  1. ALWAYS writefor one person!
    • You want to make your reader feel like you’re addressing them personally. (This is where your buyer persona comes in really handy).
  2. Use SIMPLE language
    • If people have to decode what you’re saying, they’re not ABSORBING what you’re saying.
    • Don’t try to be clever, with long, complex words. And don’t assume more words is better (unless you’re writing for a Professor).
    • Be helpful and use simple words, be generous, and keep it concise!
    • If in doubt imagine you’re talking to a class full of kids.
  3. Ask QUESTIONS
    • Posing questions helps your reader process what you’re saying more intensely. Which automatically makes your writing more persuasive.

INSTEAD OF:TRY:
“You are invited to the launch of
Tom's Burger Hut on Saturday.”
“Free on Saturday? Love burgers?
Join us for the launch of Tom's
Burger Hut.”

  1. Use SHORT sentences and paragraphs
    • Break long sentences into parts.
    • Aim for no more than 13 words per sentence. Or less.
    • Don’t overuse sentence bloaters such as really, very, almost, probably etc. Or remove them completely.
    • You can start a sentence with And, But or Because.
  2. Use CONTRACTIONS
    • Contractions make your copy sound more human.
    • We’re going to the cinema, sounds more realistic than we are going to the cinema. Without these, you sales copy will sound wooden and forced, so use this surprisingly powerful trick to engage your reader.

“We are”“We’re”
“Are not“Aren’t”
“You will”“You’ll”

The importance of Headlines
  • The main goal of your headline is to get your first sentence read.
  • The 4 U’s - Urgent Unique Ultra-specific Useful
  • If you want to create headlines that seduce people into click, share, open and read you need to do at least one of the following:
  1. Create urgency
    • What you don’t want your reader to do is put off reading your article, or save it for later, translation, never. So adding urgency nudges them to click, open or read, now. Deploy those explosive power words again. Words like Now, Today, Quick and ASAP, to make them feel that they could miss out if they don’t act now.
  2. Be unique
    • People value novelty. Our brains love new things. So your readers are more likely to pay attention if you write in a way that’s fresh and surprising. So try to avoid writing boring or run of the mill headlines.
  1. Be ultra-specific
    • People love to know what they’re going to get out of reading something.
  1. Be useful
    • If you’re struggling to write a headline that’s ultra specific or unique, then offering a mouthwatering benefit is your sure-fire way to grab attention.
    • If in doubt, if you’re ever stuck, be helpful. It’s the guaranteed way to get inside your readers head. So convey a benefit, to give people a reason to continue past the headline. Don't make this mistake of trying to be clever or witty. Just be helpful and you can't go wrong.

Sry didn't mean to steal your thread and I tried to keep it as short as possible, but yeah here are some helpful tips. Let me know if I missed something.

Cheerio!
Gold right there. Beautiful advice and it is well written.

If you're looking to level up your ad copywriting skills, I suggest that you load up your competitors' ads.

It may sound easy, but it takes a lot of focus and patience.

Depending on how many keywords you're targeting, this can take months to do right.

But this can work for you if you're launching a fairly targeted campaign with very few keywords.

I suggest that you start with your competitors and look at the following factors:

What do they think your target customers need?

How are they approaching that need?

What kind of experience does their ad promise?

What kind of experience do they actually deliver?

Look at their wordings. What kind of emotional states are those ads creating?

Pay close attention to the words. Are they provocative? Open-ended? Is there more than one interpretation?

Ask yourself these questions when reverse engineering your competitors and coming up with your own version.

After you've come up with your version, test your ads.

Run low-level tests to see if it has traction.

Come up with variations and pick the variation that got the best results.

Make variations of that and see if you can come up with a variation that gets even better results.

Keep repeating this process until you get the conversion rate you're looking for.

Honestly, it's just practice, the key thing to focus on is the intent for the reader and try to give them what there looking for. After every line read it, figure out the intent (what people reading that line alone would want to accomplish), follow with a line fulfilling the intent. Once you've practiced with that and you're doing it automatically your set.
