    Hi

I am performing some keyword research, and wondering if you white hat SEO people could help me in how I go about being able to identify if certain keywords are rankable (1st page/top 10).

Currently reading, but any information that you could post would be a huge help.

    Thanks

Estimating the competition's strength is going to be pretty tough especially when you're new to SEO. There are a lot of variables that you've to look after to come up with a solid keyword.

You can use Traffic Travis/Link Assistant's Rank Tracker/Market Samurai to get a rough estimate of the competition for any given keyword. You can try this cool free online service too http://www.keywordrevealer.com/keyword_tool.php but it says under maintenance now so check it back later.

Intially you without compare your competitor you must research the keyword for your website. with the help of that KW report (That includes competition and traffic)
    1. Using the backlink tool you find the anchor text of competitor
    2. Match the proper KW words in the Meta tags
    If you need more KW,
    3. Google the "Exact KW" and find the related searches (it will be useful for long tail KWs)
    4. Try to replace the synonym in the KWs

Analysing keywords is hard these days as PR has not been updated in a long time and many people use blog networks with hidden links nowadays.

Generally look at the top 3 and evaluate their links. Look at the strength of the individual links, how many are there that target the hard anchor text? What kind of juice do they give ? Age, placement of the links (forum links / comment links are worth less than in content links). Look at the Trust Flow and DA of the Domain itself and of the page that is ranking.

E.g. A domain can have a very high TF and DA but the page that is ranking has low TF and PA and a low amount of backlinks, that would be somewhat easy to overrank but if the ranking page has high TF and PA it will be quite hard.

I would suggest using Market Samurai to get a first overview of the stats.

You must review their listings, and see the collection of keywords they use, including ad group ideas.

It's important when analyzing keywords that you know which keywords your competitors use and if you're in the proper league to either continue to use them or try for keywords that are still popular yet not used as often.

Some paid keyword analyzers can tell you which competitors use which keywords, but this is often limited to what's used for Google AdSense campaigns. A good way to determine what keywords your competitors are using is to use keyword research tools to extract keywords from their pages, and then copy and paste your selected keyword into a search engine such as Yahoo! or Google to see where they show up.

You might use google adwords to check their search results, competition of that keyword. Then check top 10 search results of that keyword in google(Top 10 websites domain age, title, description, page rank, backlinks).

SEO tools would misguide you when giving keyword competition, though they may be able to give you a rough idea. Use different ones instead of relying upon a single one so you can see what different backlinks sources reveal.
