How to identify ACTUAL trends?

A couple of days ago there was a shortime buzz of like two days for example - The Real Housewives star's daughter getting nose job, nicki minaj's pregancy etc. So those were like short term trends. But how to identify ACTUAL trends that are not come and go? Really having a weird time on this haha
