How To Hire A Programmer/App Developer Without Them Stealing Your Idea?

I want to get an app/website made and I will need to hire a programmer. How do I do it so that they don't steal my idea?

Anyone with any experience how would i go about this?

Easiest way is to hire locally, based on a contract. You have all the legal authority this way. It may prove to be a little more expensive than cheaper country workers but it`s safer.
 
Hire a person you trust and sign a non-compete contact. Another way may be to split the application into two separate tasks and hire two programmers to work on them.
 
Tech contracts contain clauses worth millions of U$ in damages should anything leak or be stolen.

This still doesn't make it sure that he won't choose to steal your idea and build it alone, if there isn`t any contract between the two of you.
 
This is a question a lot of people ask who are new to IM / entrepreneurship...

Most programmers aren't entrepreneurs and it's quite rare for programmers to run off with ideas if you go about it the right way. From my experience they want the guaranteed income from developing rather than the slim chance that they can run away with the details and make a killing with no marketing / business experience. Find someone who has a solid portfolio and the necessary skills and get your project going.

Then I would have to hire someone from the same country Im assuming? Where would you find these contracts?
 
Chances are they are not going to run off with it. They just want to get paid for the work and move on to the next contract. Keep in mind they are programmers, not affiliate marketers.

If you hire outside your country you will need to direct your employee to your embassy in that country, where he will sign the contract in front of a notary official who will give it legal value in your country and theirs and can be enforced there.

You don't find these contracts, you hire a lawyer to write one. You can find templates but if your product is worth anything, you need a lawyer for the fine print.
 
Besides contracts and advices you got already, here's another: you can hire more than one programmer, give them pieces of the puzzle.Of course, you should be able to connect those pieces after.
 
Just hire me and I will even give extra ideas and twists :).

Plan B:
Create algoritm if you can, than split it on few programmers.
 
+1 for what KraftyKyle said. Unless they can see a revenue stream already coming in, you don’t have much to worry about. These freelance programmers see ‘great’ ideas all the time from people like you. It’s the traffic source/user on-boarding that’s the real challenge.

Like the other guy said, split the work between two coders so that no one person can put together the whole picture of what you’re doing.

Or, just instill a fear of God into your freelancer.

True for the most part - but the two are not mutually exclusive. I do both myself and I know several programmers who want to launch their own products. In at least two cases based on something they've worked on for someone else. Most do underestimate how much work and money the marketing would take.

A contract might help. But I'd seek actual legal advice on putting it together if the project is worth this hassle. You can't enforce a vague non compete in your own country let alone with a freelancer online.

At the end of the day unless you have something which you can 100% prove is proprietary (most projects really are not) there's not a lot you can do.

Say you hired me and I liked the idea. Even if I did think you had a contract which would scare me I could just as easily get someone else to write the code. Then even if you DID know I was the one who gave him the idea (which, let's face it, you'd have no way of knowing) what would you actually be able to feasibly do about it?

In short. If the project is worth it you need to speak to an actual lawyer. Ideally someone who knows the specifics I'd imagine this would fall into copyright law.

Other than that I'd hire a programmer who gets a lot of work. He's probably too busy to bother with another side project.
 
I would for sure agree with the idea of hiring someone, some what locally and have them sign a Non Compete and a Non Disclosure.

You could hire someone on the cheap from another country but chances are they wont give a damn about your NC and NDA.
 
Be careful, Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from the Winklevoss Twin Brothers and created Facebook hahaha
 
Have a contract + document everything.

No coding can save him from getting his ass smacked from a lawsuit.
