I recently noticed links appearing in the AI Overview. Not a usual reference link, but an anchored link to my competitor's page.

I have three questions.

1. Is it something new, or did I just notice it late? Because, as I remember AI overview was linking page as a reference before.
2. How to get my link or page up there?
3. Does it count as a backlink?

The contents of AI overviews is always in flux, they add in links where it seems fitting to do so. For example, if I make that search they AI overview added in a link to 'Aspose'. There will be certain thresholds that sites have to reach in order to be eligible to appear in AI overviews, and this will mainly be that they are seen as a proper entity (probably have a knowledge panel), age, and authority.

Getting your link up there will mainly involve working on your brand recognition and content relating to the query. Eg, SysTools has this meaty page: https://www.sysinfotools.com/converter/pst-to-pdf.php

It won't count as a backlink in any sort of SEO sense as AI overviews are generated on the fly, and Google won't be spidering it's own generated overviews.

Brand Search Volume will affect it.

Yeah, it's because the query is an 'informational' query, which is what triggers AI overviews. The query is interpreted as wanting to know how to convert between those two formats, which is something AI overviews can answer. Conversely if the query is something like 'pst to pdf converter' then AI overviews aren't triggered, as your query is looking for a product or service.

So to target informational queries nowadays, you want to work on your branding exposure along with having content that can answer the query. Even with this, you probably won't get any traffic from them unless you're already ranking highly.

For the product/service queries you can still use standard SEO practices.
