Forum posting is one of the Off page SEO methods.There are several other methods of the Off page to get traffic to your site.They can be as follows:

Blog posting
Article posting
social book marking
Classified submission
Directory submission
Press release submission.

These methods are also effective.But they are time taking.Instant approval blogs and Forums with signature works better for getting more traffic.
