how to get rank1 in google?

Hey guyss im fairly new to this site, been reading a lot on the forums but decided to just join, and i can consider myself a noob compared to others that ive seen on here

I have about half a dozen websites that im running right now and im just wondering what are some ways to get rank 1 in google for your keyword?

A buddy of mine told me to find a keyword and write 10 articles and putting that keyword about 5% of the time in an article. He said thats a link building strategy and that will help get up there in google.

Can anyone explain/expand on this so i can become more clear

There are lots of thread how to do SEO or link building for a new site... It will be tough to explain all stuff again... sorry i am kinda lazy...
