I'm new to Pinterest and looking to understand things better. What's the best way to get pins to go viral?

I hear it's a bit tougher to do these days but still possible. From what I gather, content and keywords need to be well thought out. Visual elements should be tall dimensions and there needs to be strong graphics & text overlays. Assuming these are there, how do you boost the pin? Is it group boards...purchased likes/repins...side accounts that support the main account? Is a boost even necessary and if so, what is the best approach?

Thanks in advance to all the Pinterest experts out there!

Join as many relevant groupboards as possible, including "pin everything" boards. That way, you'll have many boards to pin your images and not just your boards over and over. Make support accounts in different IPs and repeat. Keep in mind that joining groupboards are manual labor and should be an ongoing thing. But IMO, they're worth it.

Thanks @cyrusdavirus, very helpful. I've read a few of yours and @xinga post, you two share a lot of great knowledge on pinterest. I haven't had much luck with group boards. The ones I'm in, the activity is so low. I read somewhere that the goal is to get at least 100 saves/repins in order to give your pin a chance of going viral. Are purchased repins/saves a bad idea? When you mentioned joining "pin everything" boards...does that help, isnt it general and not in your related niche?

you need to get your pin , repined by other big boards users.

How to get that to happen? Is there something similar to Instagram, where you can pay large accounts/influencers to repin?

i have no experience with buying repins. Guess it depends on the quality of the repins. I am not entirely sure if the repin count is weighted. Could give it a try.

Well the 100 saves thing was a quote by me. That is just my personal experience from my personal accounts - might be different for others. But it is around that mark my pins lift of exponential :)

i am not aware of any such network. would be fun, though. I am sorta friends with a well targed account with 2m followers. Everytime he repins, i gain like 300 saves, which translates in a huge traffic spike

Thanks for weighing in, very helpful! I assume the 100 save thing is from high-quality accounts? Or does it matter if I use a non-influencer side account and repin the crap out of a pin to different boards? Trying to figure out if I pursue building relationships with quality accounts or if I invest my time into a tiered approach or if it's a mix of splitting my time doing both (but not as well as focusing on one).

a repin from a spam account will have no resulsts whatsoever. Of course you need authority pins. Also if the landing page doesn't contain pinable images, nothing will happen either (half of my traffic comes from pins users saved directly from my sites).

there are a couple of pinterest groups on facebook. but they will only take in non-commerical quality websites - at least the one I know. As all engagement groups, they are more or less useful.

You can make your own group boards, too. Build them up. And when you have 2K or so followers, you can offer to trade invites with other group board owners. Again, this will take time, should be ongoing, and practically all manual labor. But worth it. FYI, 2K followers is my bottom limit for joining boards. No particular reason, something I just made up and it stuck. You should define your own standard.

How do i get invited from group boards? Most of the group boards have no contact info.

Look for the owner's latest pin and leave a message via comment. Use @ownersname to get their attention at the upper right dropdown.

One thing I know for sure, at least from my accounts, is that group boards grow faster than non-groups. Maybe start there to get followers.
