Other (more old skool) techniques could include:

    1. Ensuing that your sign up process is crystal clear and that the benefits of signing up are obvious
    2. If you have a blog then have the option to sign up to newsletters etc close to your comments boxes
    3. Test different positions for sign up box (box, sides, bottom etc)
    4. Have multiple sign up positions
    5. Have a sign up box on order confirmation pages or make it clear that ordering will automatically add them to any email list
    6. Tweet (or use other social media channels) to show how many people you have sign up and what their benefits are (might prompt more into signing up)
    7. Sign up to enter free Prize Draw
    8. Add sign up link to email sigs
    9. Use the word FREE to promote sign up
    10. Make the name different, rather than "Sign up to Newsletter" how about "Sign up for ExpertMail" etc

The result may vary for you, so I suggest to try all (one by one)for particcular span of time and track the sign ups. According to me slide up box is much effective.
Basically, if you've got great content and you make it easy for people to sign up for email updates, you should begin to see significant list growth.
