I believe he's referring to HIS product. So "try to promote the best products" really has no relevance.

You could try searching for websites offering similar products and contacting potential affiliates or alternatively you could offer discounts. Reviews are another good way to gain affiliates.

Getting affiliates sometime becomes tough either when your sales page is not that good or affiliate commissions are not attractive or when there are high refund rates, so one needs to keep a check on these other than that promote on forums , set up JV, go for reviews on certain blogs, that generally helps..

What kind of commission percentage are you offering? What's the EPC? In addition to conversion rates, a lot of affiliates want enough bang for every buck.
If you're offering anything less than 60-65%, a lot of affiliates won't bother, because there are sites that are converting just as well, but with higher payouts per click.
