Hi guys,

I'm sure this has been asked already but the method might be outdated as things constantly change online.

Is there a way to get an inactive username on instagram?

I've tried contacting instagram. I've contacted instagram through the help guide which is mostly automated and they sent me an automated email stating inactive account cannot be deleted and I should use comas, periods, underscore, etc to have same username and that they do not delete inactive accounts. Also if I have the name trademark then it would work. Trademarking isn't just an over night fix and it is costly so in my case it is not worth it.

Are there any other methods?

I've tried contacting the user for about 2 years and still a no go. They have been inactive since 2012 (their last post). They were only active for 2 weeks it looks like through their postings.

I've emailed instagram asking how many years does an account have to be inactive in order for them to delete it. I hope they will message back. I used a "report problem" method under settings because I dont know if there is a quicker way to contact instagram. They do take their sweet time or might not message back at all. At least that's what the auto reply stated.

Hoping someone has any past or current experience in this.

Thanks in advance.

First of all stop expecting that they are going to reply you.
If they replied you then it was an automated email for sure.

Secondly don't just stop because of this, don't let this block your mind.

If you manage to pull down the account by getting people to report it, the username will be gone forever. So think again before pulling off such stunts if you really want that username.
If the exact domain name is available for the username you want then create a genuine looking website. Create an alternate username on Instagram and then use the trademark form to contact them. You don't have to attach any trademark files, you can attach domain ownership proof if you want. In the section where they ask to elaborate you can mention that the inactive 'username' is creating a confusion among your customers to get in touch with you and you would like to claim it and replace your current username with it.
Probability of you getting it is 50:50. It doesn't work every time. But I know someone who successfully claimed it this way last year.

Thank you NirvanaWolf for your reply.

I did not report the inactive account. What I found out in other forums online is how to get in touch with instagram quicker by going under the settings under my own username account and reporting a problem. I've asked them what is their policy regarding inactive users and how I do have other social media with the same user name and a domain (however my domain name has a hyphen between the two words).

Regards you advising to get a domain name with the exact username. Yes, this would be a great idea. I am aware of this but the domain name that I would ideally want to own is at the moment costing $3,500 USD. At this moment it does not make sense for me to invest such amount in order for me to maybe obtain an instagram username.

I was hoping others could share how they were successful in getting an inactive username.

I will not give up just yet. I will keep on trying like I have been.

Thank you for your reply NirvanaWolf.

Unfortunately Instagram doesn't care. So no matter how hard you try they'll not respond with an outcome in your favour.
Keep trying though. And if you eventually manage to get it somehow, do update this thread. I'm sure many others are stuck with this problem.

Instagram doesn't care at all. They don't even help you when you get hacked so I let you imagine for your case.

The only way it'd be possible is if you are a very famous brand (spending a lot of money on IG) and/or know someone working at Facebook.

I knew someone who was working there and he unbanned twice our account + merged all small similar accounts using our brand name...

If you have a name trademarked, you can submit your proof of TM from a business email related to that TM.

For example if you want the name @florida, you would need to register Florida as a trademark in a juridiction that doesn't have it registered.

Get a trademark from someplace like Legal Zoom.

Then reach out to FB saying you have found an account that infringes upon your copyright. Then you request to take the account and they follow up with you via email.

https://help.instagram.com/1921828231475726

You must reply to them from an official email linked to the trademark holder. (Law firm representing you is best)

The account should be inactive (no posts) within at least 1 year.

Good luck.
