You need a CTA in the ad or caption that makes people want to click into your profile.
"Check out the link in my bio for XYZ guide to blah"
"Do you like this or Y better? Check post Y in my profile and let me know!"
Then your profile need to be optimized to be attractive to follow.

Choose the Consideration / Traffic objective. You'll then put your Instagram profile as the intended traffic link.
Your ad must entice your target audience to want to know more, so they click the link, and then some of them will follow you.
However, Facebook will only tell you how many people clicked the link, not how many followers you gained.

You simply won't get followers with ads, you can spend 100 euro and barely get 5 followers but ofc you will get tons of likes and impressions. You can do something let's say not ethical use 1-5 child accounts, set them up put ads on them and make a fake giveaway, tell people for example, to win this iPhone first like this photo, then follow this @your main account and later announce a fake winner after a week or two, and repeat, you will get tons of followers from this, you will also lose followers after the giveway is over but you will win more than you lose .

Although I used to think ads don't work at all, that is not true in my case. Yes, it depends on the niche, and the target audience, and the ad itself, and I'm sure many other variables. But for me, it works way better than expected. And I'm a complete newbie on this.

Make your image influence the audience to engage with the account such as a follow. Basically, either make it a giveaway or do some sort of ad where users must follow your page in order to proceed, etc.
This will increase the amount of followers from likes.

Ads did not convert to followers in my case. Using follow/unfollow and posting good content had far better ROI for us.
