How to get Direct Clients for web development or programming

my first programming language was C , then Javascript, now am learning Markup languages [css $ html] then later maybe learn framework (React)...enough of that ,my question is how can i get direct clients..i don't want to freelance on upwork or fiverr..it can be hard psychologically especially to a newbie like me...i would be happy for any assistance

Are you afraid of scope creep? Cos that's what happened to me on both Fiverr and Upwork. Client wants one thing, pays for it, I do the job and he suddenly remembers another 10000 things.

Do you have a portfolio? As in, have you built anything already?

I have built several websites and other small Javascript projects, i have also built a simple shell , all in my github but my main issue is that i don't want to pass through upwork and fiverr its seems so saturated
