I was analysing competitor's backlinks and
found a very interesting things.

and if you see at the bottom,

there's achor texts to have backlinks.

is this link exchange sort of thing or hacked site?

Maybe nulled theme being used. There are a lot of themes with hidden buttons which are links. My personal is a Dot being used as link

for those who dont see the actually text here is the source code of this its called shadow box / and you use them to get a higher back link score and higher seo ranking with out having people clicking on links
