Doe it matter if a post is link a year old or do you recommend doing it on more recent posts?
as you all know nofollow and follow is all about passing link juice. I did a test on a couple of my sites using no follow links to one of my sites, and about 2 weeks later it appeared in my webmaster tools as a backlink. What does that mean? well google recognised nofollow links, but what value it puts on them..... we can only guess if there is value besides link juice
The Nofollew stops the link juice.
The bots still follow the link
Even the if you put the NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW tag in the bots still go there NOINDEX means dont show in the search engine results
NOFOLLOW means dont pass page rank
I think the NOFOLLOW tag was invented by g00gle

try and get a link from W3C, even in nofollow and you'll be boosted in the SERPs... That's all about fame... It is so difficult sometimes to get nofollow links (e.g. wikipedia) that you can get your site up in the rankings thanks to one well positioned unique link

Link Popularity is only one of several things that are transferred to a site through an inbound link. Trust, and Topical Relevance can be tranferred as well.
NoFollow simply says "I don't vouch for this site's trustworthiness." It became a standard as Web2.0 allowed for a higher level of un-moderated interactivity between user and site.
In short it's to keep things like comment spamming Viagra links from affecting your overall Trustworthiness within the SERPs. We can't be sure that Topical Relevance and even Link Popularity aren't transferred through a No-Follow link... thus a No-Follow may still be quite useful.
If nothing else a bunch of indexed no-follows would be a great way to mask your juicy links from prying eyes.
