How to find the Website Programming/Script Language???

hi mates

Hope there are many web developers and designers here.. I have been struck up in the middle of a project where the client needs some clone of a website with the same language.

I need to find the script/language with which it has been built up.

I tried some methods like

1. Finding the .html .php in the url
2. view source code

Nothing seems to be helpful as the site is like afdsdf.com/asdfhaksj

I have used a tool in firefox before that will show the website script and language. I searched over the Big G and couldnt find it again.

Really need some help from you guys.

I found it some how right now. It is on asp. But i need to know make it easy next time. It would be better if we know how to find this as a designer/developer

Well as you figured out, the fastest way to get that information is to look into file extensions.
However, finding out in which language some web site is written is completely unimportant for your coding effort. I will explain why.

The target platform for all websites are HTML+Javascript, Flash second, everything else behind. All web development platforms target first, while Flash is targeted by Adobe's development ecosystem. I am trying to say here that you can write AJAX application in Python,Perl,PHP,Ruby,ASP or even plain C, so the only thing you should be worried about it if there is Flash or not.

As minute80 said, the server side language is irevalent (to some extent, not all languages are equal - as some are quicker to develop in than others). The major concern will be what is happening in the browser.

But why would the client want the site copied in the same language. Do they believe that it can only be done in that language.

The client is asking for same website on same platform. I was eager to know how the website was built up and in what script..

Looks like i have to ask some serious questions..

I will just tell you this: if you go ahead with the coding, based on the expectations of the client, you're going to have problems.

Let them know that you're not going to be able to produce a 100% perfect copy. There is no way, without access to the original source code and then that would be playing with copyright violation fire.

Also are they expecting to run the site on cheap hosting, if so than just let them know what is required to run asp sites.
