How to find forums for free?

Well you can either find the footprints of the forum software and use scrapebox http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/black-hat-seo/402252-cleaned-list-forum-footprints.html

Use a site like bigboards to find sites that are in your niche, with high traffic

Expanding on what wannabe said, by footprints he means a spring of text that is commonly shared between alike platforms. For example, for vBulletin, this search query in Google short work: "Powered by vbulletin" keyword goes here

Another idea is to set up Google alerts on some of the keywords/topics related to the niche and subscribe to get only discussion/forum updates. That way you'll find a lot of stuff.
