How can I go about finding domains that have recently expired? I've seen some services for this, but want to go about doing it myself.

For expiring domains try domcop or freshdrop. I don't think that the expiring domains are listed in expireddomains.net

Try the konker marketplace if you're on a budget. If you feel comfortable with your bidding skill try the GoDaddy auction.
