How to find a really experienced and highly skilled web dev team?

Really depends what you are looking to do and how big is the project. Sometimes you might think you need a 'team' when just couple of people will do. I recently built a social network / dating site using just 1 designer and 1 developer both hired from BHW and they both did a great job.

But if you do need a bigger team then i would recommend putting out a job Ad in your local area on sites in your country like Craigslist (for US) and Gumtree (for UK) and try to find out of work, out of luck (there is a huge unemployment in Europe right now with many good people out of work) but highly skilled and motivated individuals willing to work for a smaller fee to get a bit of money coming in and also recent experience. Also these people will be ready and available to start work straight away and no waiting for someone to finish work on another project.

excellent thank you, will give you guys a rep

On elance there are a few companies developing iphone games and apps. They have estimated earnings of $500k+, their minimum hourly rate is $25 to $50. I'd say you can collect a team from there, make a complete documentation of your idea then they'll estimate the hours that will go into the development. Let's say 3 programmers are working on your program, they estimate 200-hours to be going in your project. So that's whooping $10k, not ridiculous amount of money like others are saying.

I have developed a custom built program for me not from elance but from a local company, there are a lot of issues that come when you want to develop an application. There is a lot that goes wrong, but when you do see the final outcome as per your imagination you can make serious money out of it. Just remember, 'Professionals' time is more precious, they charge you high $50,$100 per hour. You evaluate the job required to be done - It may not need to be built by professionals.

According to your estimations, a 'professional' and 'highly skilled' web developer would be working 8 hours per day every day of the working week with no holiday at all over the entire year for $52k annual salary.

Do they send your project code on a flying unicorn which shits out rainbows too?

thanks ebayer, i'm not a fan of elance etc. but i got your point via PM, thanks to you as well bro

Depends on what you consider a professional to be and where they are located, a professional located in USA ( High living costs ) will def charge more than a professional living in a third-world country. In some countries skilled professionals make a max of $500 in salaries a month, why would they not work for $10k a year?

I think you should start seeing your venture as a start up rather than "let 's shop around". You are putting capital, you need a technical cofounder. Why is that?

There are 2 types of good developers. First group is called in the biz "code monkeys" (I totally do not condone the term, it just is what you hear used). The developers in this group can be brilliant, awesome, amazing but the reason they are in this group is they can't (or simply hate) to analyse, formulate and lead a project. In other words, they do not possess the entrepreneurial problem solving function of "how do I make this make money best?". So, they require management and leadership for their work to bare fruits.

In a big project, that 's the role of a CTO in a start up. To conceptualise, analyse, and lead through the countless implementation decisions that have to be made. And these programmers are on the second group - much harder to find and much better paid.

All that said, I doubt your project is big and requires a big team. The reason I doubt it is that you seem not to be technical, so how did you get to that conclusion without a technical advisor?

If your project is not big, your CTO has an easier job - why so? Good coders tend to be "my way or the highway", so the less he has to manage the easier for him :)

To answer the OP's question, there's plenty of places to find a decent web dev team. And after reading replies here, I take it you don't wanna hire via a freelancing platform. So here's my suggestion to your need:

1. Go through a directory of known coders.
2. Contact them for an interview session with them. Either on Skype or if they're in the same place as you, face-to-face.
3. If you like them, hire them.

Here are some places where you can possibly find some people for recruitment:
1. LinkedIn - It's a professional network. There's bound to be somebody there thats right for your team. You just need to be well-connected.

2. 99coders - A directory of coders. Some are mixed with designers. Some are companies and some are individuals. Give it a shot.

3. Builditwith.me - A directory of would-be coders and designers who wants to collab on a web project. You can contact them directly to see if they're interested. Most of them won't respond (maybe because they're already busy doing their projects or someone else's) but its worth a shot.

4. Dribbble - A website of powerful designers.

5. Behance - Another site of powerful designers but some are mixed with coders.

6. Geekli.st - All the geeks in the world. Including Web Developers and Designers.

7. Angelist.co - If you just wanna invest into an existing IT company startup, this is a good place to find them. No crowd-funding. Pure investors and pitchers here.

That's all I got. Go ahead and Interview them. If you're looking for partners, don't interview them. DATE them. Because if you don't really like them and don't share a common passion for a business, then he/she/they is/are not the one.

Sorry, no.
You're confusing 'skilled professional' with 'guy who can vaguely code some VB6 after watching a few YouTube tutorials'. If you find anyone who will work for $10k/year with the technical accumen to work at a company like Google, you're dreaming.

This thread is vague, you should post a little outline of what you want to get coded, may not require a professional, leave alone team of professional developers.

You're completely right.

Considering the information provided was as follows:
'How to find a really experienced highly skilled web dev team?'
'How do big companies go for the good web dev teams?'

I answered the question as if this was actually what was required, but as I said, the odds are that he's probably got an idea for a 'cool app' and thinks he can find an entire development team for $500/year.

1. U post details everywhere and go through the applications one by one.Painful but maybe u find 1 good dev in 300 applications.
2. You go and look on sites of great apps and find out who developed them and try to steal them from where they work now.
3. You post on communities and places with great devs - IRC channels for various programming languages and coding forums for coders, themeforrest.com for UI/web designers, deviantart.com and top100gfx.gotop100.com for gfx designers, etc.

If you want fish you dont go hunting with a rifle in the woods, you go with a fishing rod near a lake. That's the gist of it. Go where great people are.

Money is not always related to skill. Did you consider that money is not the most important thing in life for everyone? One of the best developers I ever worked with lives in Portugal and lives happily making $1K a month. That is all he needs and he does not want or ask for more.

Real coders don't just chase after money. If OP has a good idea and he gets some people interested he will have no trouble building a team.

Sorry, bullshit.
Try working with some actual web developers who have genuine skill, not some teenager working out of his parents basement, $1k/month is chump change.

Not bullshit. This person I refer to is on the core team of a popular open source web framework, and is well respected in the community. Since he lives in a poor country, imagine if he became wealthy (ie. earning market rate for his skill level). Do you think that would make his life better? Quite the opposite.

And I am a web developer with genuine skill. Outside America we value other things than money. But most of you are too brainwashed to understand that.

I'd love to know some successful projects you've worked on?

If you had real responsibilities (children, a wife, older parents to support) then you'd understand how stupid that sentence is.
And besides, I'm not even American, so keep your misinformed opinions to yourself.

I've gone through dozens of programmers to build my "team".

I have specific people for each type of coding I need.

It took a while to get a good contact list of programmers that both know what they're doing, and do it well.

And they get everything done within a deadline. And they won't lie to me if I say I need it done in XX days, if they don't think it's possible they'll tell me.

What I'm trying to say is that you'll have to sort through a few piles of shit before you find what you're looking for.

Also, every coder/programmer will say he/she does exceptional work..... You can put glitter on a piece of shit and it's still a piece of shit lol. Ask each person you're talking to if they have a portfolio, if they say they don't have one or can't show it to you, don't hire them. I know we all started somewhere and some people will complain about me saying that last sentence, but it's your money and I assume you want to make money off of this new project. If you have the means, hire someone good, not someone just starting out in their basement.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Brainwashed? LOL

Money makes the world turn. You are either getting money or bitching about it not being important. And those that go out of their way to express that they don't need or desire money are just planting an excuse ahead of time.
