Is there any program(free/paid) which can be used to encrypt a wordpress footer easily? The encryption must be very difficult to be decrypted, any solution?

You can use ion cube but you must code it yourself.
I think you want to give free templates with unchangeable link for link building purpose.
    Am i correct?

Yes, I want to protect the sponsored links at the footer. I'll need to encrypt many wordpress themes, so I prefer to use a program to do all the jobs.

Use something like Truebug, it's around $25 I think.
Better than the usual gzdeflate/base64 obfuscation.

Why are you encypting the footer? Did you design these WP themes yourself? Personally I'll go to great lengths to decrypt the footer which is easy to do since the plain footer code can be seen after you install the theme on your blog and then view the source of your blog page in your browser.

All you need to do is copy that plain code, edit the footer.php code by deleting everything in it and pasting in the code you copied when you viewed the source code of the blog page in your browser. But not a lot of people know that.

Decrypting html/php is a basic easy thing to do that takes 15 seconds..
So it wont help too much VS the experienced coder..

Obfuscating interpreted code is entirely useless. No matter how many levels of base64/deflate/*insert other random crap* + eval()ing you do, it is trivial to undo.

With ioncube, most hosts (hostgator, etc) offer support for it out of the box, so you don't even need to offer the loaders with the themes, etc.. It is a valid option, but you have to remember to use a licensed iocube encoder, since all the 'free' ones on the net generate bunk code that generates errors.

ioncube offers encoding on their webpage, on a one shot basis. I think it's like a buck a project or something, if you don't want to buy a license.

Hell, I own a license, and may even add this as a free service later via my website.. I never really thought about that.

You obviously know nothing about how ioncube operates, nor it's usefulness. You can encode any theme, support file, or anything else you want without impairing the theme's usefulness. Yes, I've done this many times, and there is nothing wrong with this technique.

There are many ioncube decoders in google, but honestly, very few actually work and the ones that do, tend to be a paid service.

We are all simply offering suggestions and ideas, there is no definitive answer to this question, as there are many solutions available, some paid (ie. ioncube), and others via simple obfuscation (though easily decodable by most PHP enthusiasts).

It is definitely not something worth bashing people, or arguing about.

Unless you use something like Ion Cube or Zend, everything else you can think of doing is trivial to decrypt. But using that for a wordpress footer???

Just using base64 alone will be barrier to most noobs. Not foolproof at all, but hey it takes you part of the way there.

hahaha.. not to worry, it takes far more than that to get under my skin. :) I understand you dislike ioncube and that is perfectly ok. I also understand a while back, it was a pita to host any site that had ioncube encoded parts, as you needed to install the loaders yourself, and you are right, 90% of the people out there have no idea what it is let alone trying to install it. (not to mention warez'd themes would not come with the loaders or instructions on how to install them to begin with).

In practice the loaders get installed in the same folder as the encoded theme, which the php stub detects, loads and all is happy however with recent changes to the newest PHP releases, this no longer works as it allows users to install and use rouge php dl'd modules which is a huge security risk.

Because of this, website companies (for example hostgator, etc.) have had to start installing the loaders (iocube, zend, etc.) themselves which makes it easy for website operators to simply install an encoded theme, plugin, or anything else and just have it work without even knowing it was encoded to begin with. no fuss, no muss. Most website operators (companies) worth a grain of salt should have already done this. Of course any newbie trying to run a website / blog off their home DSL using IIS (gasp) would still encounter problems without the loaders.

If you were offering your own theme (not pirated) and wish to use ioncube, this would be a non-issue, as you would simply inform the person using it how to install it.

Using ioncube or zend encoding would be by far the best method to protect the code, but is also by far the most problematic. Using simple obfuscators will save you a world of trouble, but are also very easy to decode. There are pros and cons to both sides.

    That's enough for me.

Can I use them on blogger themes? I have created some and want to distribute them, bot make it harder for not advanced users (IE: n00bs) to remove my footer links.

What about commenting out the footer? I know that works on encrypted footers. You'd have to find a solution to break the theme if someone comments out the encryption part.
