how to do your research affiliate products

Hey guys.... thanks for all the methods so far. I am glued to this site even though I am on vacation for 3 weeks. My wife thinks Im crazy now for spending so much time on the net and NOT playing games or NOT watching porn...
So I have finally decided on a plan of action and am thinking of going the Affiliate route. I just answered the maxbounty prescreening call and I was given access to the network. no big deal there if you used fairly basic whitehat seo terms in your answers.
a.) Anyways just wanted to start a discussion of the strategies invloved in deciding what niche products you should sell on an affiliate network ?

b.) Secondly do you have an IM technique decided before you pick a product OR do you pick a product and then decided on what technique to go with....

The first thing is to look for the commission rate and popularity of the product to add it in your affiliate list.

Will here is what I look for:

1- a product with unique brand name like "hoodia" for example
2- name of the product have a search volume of more than 1000 exact searches per month according to google keyword tool
3- according to google insights the product's name is expected to receive searches in the future
4- keyword competition, simply analyze the top 3 to 5 results when you search for "ProductName" or "ProductName Reviews" or any keyword that have the product name in it, the main thing you should analyze is the backlinks these websites are getting. If you can do more than them then defenately go for it.
