I am trying to get this facebook group active! It's just not working, I can't get anywhere near my 10k target .

A couple of suggestions:

Ditch the info page and add a FBML page. You can make your page ten times more appealing with a little HTML and a few images.

For your fan page updates, make them want to invite their friends. You can do this by saying things like, "Looks like today might be your last. Better live it to the max and show this to your friends so they can too!"

And lastly, Rome wasn't built in a day mate. Keep yourself patient and use some of the old friend tricks after creating a few extra accounts, such as using (and abusing) the mass add threads for various Facebook games.

For the most part, you can use it as a simple webpage with HTML code. You can also use some FBML (although it seems it's broken for the most part right now).

how do I get it to show up when the user first joins?

Click on "Edit Page" (or something similar), edit your settings for the Wall and change the "Default LAnding Tab for Everyone Else" to whatever your FBML tab is named.

This will only be shown to people who AREN'T fans of your page, by the way.
