We can find here a lot of keywords researching threads. 90% are using tools. but when you're doing keywords research what kind of things do you check on manually? Can you make a list?

Here are the things I mainly check for a keyword before selecting it:
1. Google SERPs for that keyword.
2. Forums/QnA sites or authority shopping sites (like Amazon) ranking for the keyword.
3. Length & quality of content used by competitors.

these are few important of the many things I consider before going for a keyword. Please note that I only like to search for very low comp keywords so this may not apply for harder keywords maybe.

- Look for weak websites (sites with a few good backlinks or no good backlinks at all), rank for a lot of keywords, and then steal their keywords.
Good backlinks = links that you can't acquire easily.

Notably, there are four velocities you should check.
One, keyword competition.
Two, google trends.
Three, average monthly search volume.
Four, google search results.
Keyword competition can reflect how competitive the keyword is, and I think we will all go for keywords with low competition rather than those with high competition.
Also, Google Trends allows us to see if this keyword trend is upward or downward.
Finally, you can divide the average monthly search volume by the number of Google search results. The closer the value is to 1, the lowest and best competition for your keyword.

Monthly search volume, level of competitiveness, related and suggested keywords and phrases, their lengths, their trends and tendencies, ranking predictions, and so on. This would be a basic list.

While conducting your SEO keyword research, there are three factors you must consider : the individual keyword's relevancy, search volume and user intent. This will help you answer the simple yet imperative question of whether you want someone who is entering a particular phrase into Google to engage with your brand.

Quality keyword research includes 5 phases ,
  • Baseline Keywords.
  • Keyword Expansion.
  • Keyword Filtering.
  • Keyword Selection.
  • Keyword Mapping.
