How to do keyword research?

I know this question is noob question but I finding the answer for this like 1 week, so can someone give me the keyword research method that have exact criteria to choose the keyword because another just tell me only what tool to use but I am not sure which one should I choose. I also search in the old thread but the pics just expired so please help me.
