How do you go about doing your keyword research. I am still struggling in this department. Do you pay for tools like Semrush or Ahref? It is kinda expensive if you subscribe continuously. I am currently using Ahref free keyword tool but it has a limit to the number of results. Can you use the free version of Ahrefs and get good results? Any tips on how to do keyword research? Do you guys think that keyword research is vital to the success of a blog?

I usually research keywords from top-ranking websites using Ahrefs, combined with Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends.

I’d say keyword research is pretty important, especially for a new blog. You don’t really need to pay for Semrush or Ahrefs 24/7 though. I usually combine free tools like Google Keyword Planner, Google autocomplete and Search Console, then use Ahrefs when I need to dig deeper into volume and competition. The free tools are enough to find some solid low-competition keywords if you know what to look for.

you don’t need expensive tools to start. Google autocomplete and related searches at the bottom of search results pages are free sources of real keyword ideas. Ahrefs free version plus Google Search Console once your site has data gets you pretty far without paying as well and Ubersuggest free tier fills some gaps too.

You can also combine Google's free tools with manual SERP analysis to get solid results. Keyword research is definitely critical, but content quality and user intent matter just as much.

I do use SemRush, but I do not rely on it. The reason is that earlier, I used it for a mega project. However, it did mess up. So I decided to use it as one of the tools, and not the main tool. For main tool, I now consider Google SERPs, search console, keyword planner and obvious Google auto complete. But that is not it. You also then need to match it with Google trends. After competitor research, you will then get a better idea of how to use it.

Also, if your website it new, or is not ranking, my suggestion is to not go for high volume keywords. They are luring, for sure, but they will mess you up. Instead, prepare a content strategy first. And make it a mix of all kinds of keywords. You need both, target audience, while also building trust within them.

That is how it should be now (considering keyword stuffing now just does not work anymore). It is the context and intent you will be hitting at.

From my experience, you dont need to keep paying for Semrush or ahrefs. I’ve gotten good keywords ideas using free ahrefs, Google autocomplete and checking what competitors rank for. I usually target specific, low competition phrases because they are easier to rank for and bring more relevant visitors.

I would say you don't necessarily need a paid tool. Usually start with Google suggestions, related searches and competitor pages, thenn use free tools to validate search volume and difficulty. The important part is understanding search intent and finding keywords you can reaalistically raank for, especially on a new site.

I usually start with Google Keyword Planner to find keyword ideas and check their search volume.
