Say I've got a niche and have a list of potential keywords I'd like to rank for. How do I perform competitor analysis so I can get a better idea of how I can rank for my keywords?

I've seen some screenshots of a tool -- not sure if it is Ahref or SemRush -- that includes the following data: DR, BACKLINKS, REFERRING DOMAINS, ORGANIC KEYWORDS, ORGANIC TRAFFIC.

Including the above, what factors should I research when doing competitor analysis? Which are most important? Also, should I be beating my competitors in regard to these factors -- I assume so, I just wanted to ask. :)

Thanks guys!

DR = Ahrefs
If you only count with this elements (and you cannot check the link profile of the competitors) then a combination of DR and referring domains may give you a mediocre insight, but something to start with

1. If you see a ton of referring domains (say 500+), and the DR is not big (say 40+), then you may consider that competitor is fishy and could be dangerous in many senses
2. If the DR is low (below 10), it almost always mean that the competitor is weak
3. If the the DR is average (20-40) and Referring domains range from 50-200, then this is a medium level competitor
4. Anything beyond this is (DR40+) + RD > 200 it could mean very hard competitor, except that RD are like crazy, like 1K+ and DR is between 40-50, then it's also fishy as in the first scenario

Still this are only hyphotetical cases. Without checking the linking profile it's like shooting the ducks with the funfair shotgun... say reliable cannot be the word.

you can use ahrefs to check for the keywords they rank for and links to their sites.

With that information you can see if you can get better links and out rank them.

You can also use it to find link building opportunities,

Once you have shortlist of your competitors you can check for their back link profile over all traffic volume and keywords that has high search volume. Search for their high search volume keywords to use diversify the links. I suggest SEMrush for better competitor search.

I would say, When performing competitor analysis for keyword ranking, focus on key metrics like DR, backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, and organic traffic, aiming to outperform your competitors in these areas for a stronger SEO strategy.

You can use tools like Ahref and Semrush for competitor analysis. There are many factors to consider when doing competitor research such as domain rating, keywords, backlinks, referring domains, on-page optimization and, if necessary, technical analysis.

check how many backlinks they have vs your site and target lower sites than yours.

To conquer a mountain, you’ll first need to decide which mountain you are going to climb. So, Identify your competitors. To identify them analyse the following:
1. Analyze SERP for similar product queries
2. Look at their statistics
3. Check their source of clients
4. Note brands your target buyers use

Perform a competitor SWOT analysis. Contrast the competitors’ weaknesses against your strengths. Pay attention to the opportunities they are missing.

Customer experience is one of the decisive factors. So Examine your competitors’ websites and customer experiences.

Look at your competitors’ pricing and current offers. This data gives you some baseline figures on how much people are willing to pay for different types of good.

Learn about the technology your competitors are using. Technology may seem like a tangible asset any brand could acquire.

Just working on good backlink. Good quality backlink can rank your website.

I used to work for an affiliate review site. We would run all articles through Surfer SEO or Fraser.

The first step is to track what your competitor is doing right
And then replicate it with your own twists.

Focus on backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, organic traffic, and DR/DA. Prioritize:

  1. Backlinks & Referring Domains – Quality over quantity; get strong links.
  2. Organic Keywords & Traffic – Identify gaps and ranking opportunities.
  3. Top Pages & Content Strategy – Analyze their best-performing content.
  4. On-Page & Technical SEO – Optimize structure, speed, and user experience.
Yes, aim to beat competitors in these areas, especially backlinks and content quality

you can use semrush for site analysis, here you can analyze all traffic volume of your competitors.

this is the core of their backlink profile. It's not just about having more than them, but getting links from more authoritative and relevant sites.

Look at DR, backlinks, referring domains, organic keywords, organic traffic. Check their top keywords, content quality, and link sources. Analyze SERPs for your niche, see where they rank, and identify gaps you can exploit. Technical SEO, on-page optimization, and user experience also matter. Focus on beating them in key metrics but target realistic wins first.
