If you go on ahrefs.com and check out adt.com, it says the vast majority of the links are <no text>, I see a lot of major sites like this,
my question is, how do you do a <no text> link?

Whatever comes in between <a> and </a> is an anchor text, so it will take "&nbsp"(space character) as an anchor text in your case.

OP, Most likely these backlinks are from image tags without alt attribute set.

OP, having tested this it looks like nothing will be displayed but the link will still be underlined.

Try this to remove the underline:

    Code:
    <a style="text-decoration:none;"href="http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/black-hat-seo/613473-how-do-no-text-link.html"> </a>
The explanation given by qrazy about missing alt tags also seems good.

It's simple, just leave nothing where the anchor text should be (not even a space character) and you'll be left with no text link. I did this a couple of times by accident and there was nothing, not even the underline.

    I don't understand though:
if I don't do any text, within an <a href> link, then what is the reader going to click on? because there's nothing to click on! (so who in their right mind would put such a link there? what am i missing

In the context of the site you mentioned, they've about 118k image links of which most of them(112k with No Text) doesn't have an alt attribute set in it's link. It's not naked url or with a space between <a> & </a>

    One such link is from

    which looks like this

I think this is the answer I am looking for,
so if someone simply linked to adt.com by doing
    http://www.adt.com

then ahrefs would pick it up as a "noText" link, correct? (and thus no <a href> linking was done, correct?)

If you simple write the URL then it will not be clickable.

    <a href="http://www.adt.com">http://www.adt.com</a>

You see the anchor text used here is the acutal domain itself. Other than the domain name no other text was used.

In your case anchor text is not a "No Text" but it's http://www.adt.com itself. "No Text" will be in the case when there's nothing in anchor text like in following cases.

    <a href="something.com"></a>
    <a href="something.com"><img src="xyz.jpg" alt=""> </a>

That is what I initially thought but I came to the conclusion that umerjutt00 was correct from the following definition of "no text" from ahrefs:
One useful tip: if you see "noText" anchor among the most widespread anchor texts, it is a good sign for a site, it shows, that such links have been built in a natural way, users just referred to the site with the link and didn't care about any text, which sites are so anxious about, because Google considers anchor texts during page ranking.

Just look at the anchor text list and you'll see "www.adt.com" and what could be the html for that?

And this is the backlinks count of that site, From this it's not hard to figure out that those "notext" anchors are from image links which has no alt attributes.

I am more confused than ever, lol.

I agree with you that most of those links are likely to be untagged images.

But if a naked URL was posted it would show up as <a>noText<\a> entry.

    Example 1 Anchor Link =
    Code:
    <a href="http://www.adt.com/">http://www.adt.com</a>
    or
    Code:
    <a href="http://www.adt.com/">www.adt.com</a>
    or
    Code:
    <a href="http://www.adt.com/">adt.com</a>

    Example 2 Naked URL =
In my examples, Example 1 would show up as www.adt.com circled RED in your image and Example 2 would show up as a <a>noText<\a> entry, GREEN in your image.
Most NON SEO people only post Naked URLS.

As OP asked why this occurred in Ahrefs and what the significance is I have posted and will post again their explanation.

BOTTOM LINE, "noText" IS ANY UNANCHORED LINK

you're right. I see " no text " in ahref, and it's exactly what you said. I see some forum support naked link like : https:///dfadf
and some is not. they use anchor text with " brand " then i think it's naked link. but it's not.
