Please help, Im new to seo.

What Im struggling with the most is understanding what keyword categories I have the better chance of ranking highly in.

Say 1 keyword has only 100,000 search engine results but with lots of quality websites

and a different keyword has 1,000,000,000 search engine results but with only low quality sites

Which keyword would be the one worth targeting?

Does the number of search engine results mean anything or is it only the quality of your competitors sites that matters?

Thanks

Use the search function to search for keyword research.

You need to get looking for information on learning how to keyword research properly. Not doing so will cause you to create pretty worthless websites.

There is enough knowledge on this forum that you can learn from. Keyword research is a big topic and your better of researching yourself, then others teaching you.

In a nutshell, use google keyword tool (type that in google) to find high search volume and low competiton keywords. You want keywords that people are looking for, and that there are not many sites for.

If you're a newbie then I would recommend to do MNS for learning. Then go seriously and start a real business. Read more on BHW, use search function and you'll understand it all. Btw there's a free trial keyword research u could try at SEOBook dot com.

There's a free, short ebook from LinkAloha:

Take a little time and read it. It's really helpful.

If the sun aligns with the moon and the star then that's your keyword!

It doesn't matter how many results for a keyword really - just look at the strength of the top competitors. THey are the ones you need to beat.

In principle its not that difficult, but... hehe, its mostly a bunch of work to get a nice keyword that makes money.
For me, the following facts are important: Does the keyword (long or shortterm) fits to the targeted group of customers I like to have on my website, than how many times this keyword will be searched for (depends on how much money you make with a single customer, so as less the win, as more searches per month you need to make profit), than I have a look to the competitors, how many websites are already ranking for that search term, how old are they, how many backlinks they have aso. Than I have a look for a domainname that should have the keyword included (best case). I mainly search for longterm keywords, cause the converting rate is mostly much better.
The rest is as ever, programming a website, creating unique content, a good log analysing software and than starting building backlinks

I always try to find a search term far from the mainstream, smile. No competition, not much backlinks needed and the most work is the finetuning of the converting page, which has to turn a visitor in a paying customer...

So I hope my english is not that horrible and you get me points...
Have a nice business and a even better day
