How to check PageRank?

Hey all I'm new!
This is probably a really stupid question but:
is there a "legit" way to check PageRank?
because from I read around here in the forums, checking PageRank with a software might hurt your PR (is it right?)

I recommend SEOQUAKE plugin for firefox. it is perfect
