Not to come across as a jerk, but paying for Copyscape is probably the best thing you could do if it's actually important to you. The time you waste by using other content-checking methods is worth more than the $0.05 a pop Copyscape would cost you.
You can take part of a sentence and paste it into google in quotation marks. It's not 100% accurate, but neither is copyscape. Copyscape is definitely the best option I've found.
