In my opinion, spam score is a useless metric in today's SEO landscape.
It's a metric developed by Moz honestly, the best thing Moz has is their toolbar chrome extension.
Other than that, I use ahrefs personally.

Here the spam score is identified in many ways.. Understanding the DR, PR, Bad IPs, Indexing, Spun contents, etc., can cause spamming and put in the downgrading of the rankings.
