how to charge client?

Hello

Remember that old client of mine that was a cheap ass and didn't want to pay? well, if you don't, it's ok.
so today he texts and calls me 100 times. I dont answer because I know he wants something for free.
his text: "why is my website not working?"
I checked his website and indeed, it was down. so I got back to him 4 hours later, telling him "the problem is with your host, you need to contact them and have this resolved"
he says "how do I contact them? can you do it for me?"
I said "yes, but I have to charge you $20"
he said "OK, I am willing to pay as long as this problem is resolved"

so reason his site is not working: he hasn't paid his bill.
Now the problem is, if I just text him "you need to pay your bill" he will pay his bill and screw me out of my $20.
so how do I make sure I get paid?

Know him IRL?

Go into his office and sit down with him (take pre-printed invoice)

Don't know him? paypal/bank transfer

but that's weird. let's say I meet up with him and he pays me $20. then I tell him "thanks for the $20. now you need to pay your bill and everything will work"
so I am selling him this information that he needs to pay his bill? doesn't that make me look like an ass? I would rather make it look like I did something to make things work.

You 're not getting paid for this - cut your huge loses and move on

Do yourself a favor and don't answer his calls. Sounds like a royal pain in the ass.

tell him you have a minimum charge of $xxx to work out what is wrong and because of his history you need payment up front before looking at it. Once you get payment, sit on your arse for an hour and a half before you call him back and tell him you have isolated the problem...bla bla....

Tell him you know the issue to his problem and he needs to pay you first then you'll give the information.

Ok, so. Yes, actually, I DO remember that asshole. Aaaaand I remember myself and a bunch of other people telling you that you are drastically undervaluing your services, even way back then. An attorney that doesn't know he hasn't paid is webhosting bill NEEDS HELP. And, he has you on the phone. That's worth $50 right there. That's called being "on retainer" or "on call", or whatever. His choice is to call someone else, someone he doesn't know, someone that might overcharge or straight-out defraud him.
