I glanced through the Post and I agree to most of the parts written. People in general tend to forget that once they start going down the "Quick" path they are leaving "whitehat" far behind. White hat is not quick and definitely not for fly by night companies.
Having been in the industry since last many years and having worked on numerous corporate sites and well as reputed brands I can say that even some big names and brands initially fell for the "greyhat" thingy due to the lure of it being "giving quick and tangible results". Many of them who went in too deep got burned and lost a huge traffic and managed to hold on as they were big brands and had more lawyers than marketers to help them
However once burned, most went back to White-Hat and the first thing they emphasized on was that no harm should come from any of the campaigns that were made and gaining rank/traffic and in general popularity came second and they also started focusing on social media in a much more holistic manner.

To be fair, I don't believe in SEO services in general and the logic behind it is very simple. Many people do struggle to get their websites ranked, it is the only reason which prevents them from earning money. Most methods somehow imply traffic generation and still there is not any better way than organic SEO traffic. So if people who run these services could do what they promise they'd just make more money without selling any service.

Although! White hat SEO is far expensive but those back links generated from white hat process give high weightage to keywords.
