Dear reader,
I am in no way calling myself an expert within the field of SEO, however I do have something that I want to clarify with the people that are just getting started. These are tips I wish I would have payed attention to, but didn't when I started out so here they are.
1. When it comes to on-site optimization create a website for real internet users, not for search engine spiders.
What does this mean? It is simple, do not over optimize your webpage more then what would be normal. The typical SEO on-site optimization tips are given on one simple fact: to give a better experience for the reader. So when you are creating a page instead of thinking that you should optimize it for the search engine spiders think about it this way: If you were searching on a search engine looking for answers would you have preferred a site that had 0 pictures and 100 words, or would you liked a detailed but simple guide that provides pictures and a nice experience to you as a reader, say they implemented a video as-well for you to watch. Now that is what people want, they want unique content, a good experience and a simple but nice looking site. This means that there is no point in copying content from Wikipedia, if they wanted that they would have visited Wikipedia.
2. White-hat SEO is the only way
If you are looking to establish a professional and long-lasting side that provides a good experience to the user you have to be a white-hat SEO. Do not buy backlinks, rather do it the hard way..
3. Spend time on keyword research, even though it is insanely boring.
A good keyword research lies the foundation of a well created SEO site. It is the core and if implemented correctly onto the site it will obviously boost it.
4. Don't think PageRank - that will come with time!
If you are in the process of creating a new site and you wish to compete on high competitive words with sties that has been on the internet for 5 years.. well sorry to say.. you will have a bad time. Instead go for the long-tail keywords and build your way up, start getting recognition to your site and the PageRank will increase by time if you consciously implement the steps I have listed above. However you do not have to give up on the heavily populated keywords, just do not let them be your main focus.
5. Search engine optimization takes time
It takes time, especially for us white-hats... and it sucks, but is it worth it when you finally reach that #1 on Google? - Every second.
Good things come to those who wait. Nice guys finish last - however we do finish on top

- Establish connection with people within the same niche
- If another site publishes a great article, share it! Who knows, maybe they will do the same for you when you write a good article.
- Provide strong content that users want to share through social media or link to from their own blog.
- Become an expert within your own field of expertise / knowledge.
