wouldn't you backlink for long tail keywords the same as short tail? Sorry i'm new to the site.

Do it just as you would do with competitive keywords. However, I think it would be better if you go for contextual links when it comes to long tails.

Same way you do for short tail keywords.

However, even if you don't, Google might still rank you for a ton of long tails. Happens all the time

I would say that there is no such difference of getting back links for long tail keywords the strategy is same as for exact keywords..

Yes, this, or at least contextual anchor text. I like to use a lot of naked links or anchor text with my site name for my homepage, but I use more keywords as my anchor text with my inner pages.

There is no changes in the process/strategies of creating backlinks for short or long tail keywords... its still the same...

contextual links are always the rule for link building.

You can use longtail keywords for your anchor text. Just don't hit them as heavily and try to use some random junk anchor as well to keep it natural.

I tend to rank hundreds, possibly thousands of longtails for my streaming sites, just by purchasing some decent wikis, social bookmarks, web 2.0's and blog posts. That's easily more than enough. The more I backlink inner pages, the more my other inner pages rank, as I have series that are connected to other series for some sweet deep linking. :] But that's going off topic. Like I said, normal backlinks work for longtails fine. Save your good quality backlinks for the main keyword(s), or your homepage.

Ranking long tails is the same as the short tail keywords. Only difference is that you'll get to the top faster with the long tails. And if you have everything done right, your site will start showing up for short tail keywords you didn't even target.
