You can, and should, keep your eye on your backlinks. Monitor your webmaster tools and track your rankings. If and when someone starts a NSEO campaign, you need to get busy and use the disavow tool. If the attack is fairly bad, you can hire a helper. Some Fiverr gigs pop up to help with this, and/or you can hire a virtual assistant to combat the offensive links.
NSEO attacks are usually not as effective as you might think, especially when you have tiered links. The tier system pumps up the juice, and often negates NSEO attempts, unless your competitor has a real ax to grind. If you run into a real problem, you should seek out a professional to help you.

Some fatal mistakes people make is sharing their money site with competitors who they claim are friends

Can't really fight it and clean up is really hard to do. One of my website was hit with 15k spam links and within 48 hours, I was down to #100-150 from #3-8.

You're a faggot. If you think ruining people's livelihood is funny because you are too lazy to compete fair and square, then you are really a jack off. Go back to the hole you crawled out of.
To answer your questions, there is no way to avoid it. Try to find niches that are less susceptible or have less competition. If you are in a niche that is full of douchebag lazy fucks, then the only thing you can do is keep an eye on your link profile and use the disavow tool. Let's hope that Google changes their algorithm to simply discount links rather than penalizing them. That is the only way I can see anything changing.

Do monitor your website backlinks. Don't let them to down your sites. Keep watching your site backlinks with the help of useful tools in the market. If you have found any massive amount of links point towards your site, then disavow them before get in to any serious trouble...

The way to go about it is to build all of your links to a website that's 301'd to your money site. If your money site gets hit with neg-seo, you just let that site drop and build a new site with all your original links 301'd there. This helps keep your link profile clean. It's not the end-all solution, but certainly helps.

Hello. it looks like some others have pointed you in the right direction. Look for the posts on this forum where people list the 100 best tools, the best free backlink checkers, etc. You need to familiarize yourself with the various tools we use. I don't want to tell you exactly what I use, because it's much better for you to develop your own style, learn what works for you, and provide a good service that is not simply a clone of what others are doing.Good luck to you.
