If we exclude scams, then it's one phrase and one phrase only.

Managing expectations.

I've done a fair bit of selling on here and if there is a thing I have learned is how to manage expectations of the shit that you sell.

I do not often visit the dispute subforum but when a thread pops up I may be clicking on it.

I notice as a common denominator in all these threads, once again excluding scams, that could simply have been avoided if the seller managed expectations better before the financial transaction gets initiated.

If you have talked with 1000 people online then you have a feel usually in the first 3 minutes of the conversation where this is going. Some people have the get rich quick mindset and see the product as a magic bullet that will solve everything. If I go ahead with that transaction essentially admitting to the buyer yes you're right, this will solve all your problems then the chance this buyer comes back on here and opens a dispute goes up exponentially.

On the other hand, I tell them look I'm not sure this is the right thing for you, you expect this and I can only give you that. Then, if they go ahead with the purchase and it ain't work out, they will not be coming here to opening a dispute, even though they purchase the exact same product.

Can you see why?

Managing their expectations is crucial otherwise they feel they have been deceived and want to take "revenge".

As a side effect, telling them what's really up creates trust in you and you may have made a long-time customer.

Great advice and I completely agree, however, I'm pretty sure a lot of the sellers are aware that they're not being exactly upfront about the service or product they provide, not interested in correcting the customer to manage expectations, just to make that quick sale which compromises their long-term success for short-term gain.

Of course, it's also up to the customer to actually have the common sense to notice when they're being sold on magic bullets as usually it's not that difficult to see.

I agree...managing expectations is key in sales. it helps reducing the chance they feel deceived. Clear communication builds trust and can turn a one-time buyer into a loyal customer.
