How to actually rank a website?

I can't really seem to find a REAL way to rank a site, over time. Either I am blind, or there aren't any helpful WHITEHAT SEO tutorials.
I don't want to do any blackhat SEO methods, as they run a risk of your site being blocks on search engines, which I don't want for ranking a legitamate website.

Can anyone help me? How to manually create high quality backlinks, no programs (I can't afford those), and any other techniques to rank my website. I am willing to work, even if it does take months to do so, I just need a little help to get me started. Just need any way that will help me rank better, and how to get ranked. Any other tips are welcome too, thanks.

Well you are pretty much blind, hate to break it to you...

But if you want to do white hat, build a pretty site, add real, relevant, quality content, do on page optimization, buy real social promotions to generate real organic interest, pay for PPC advertising, and pray.

Or you can go blackhat, or just go primarily whitehat and buy a few links, run some tricks with social media, things that are less risky. Realize a lot of people here aren't just mass creating backlinks with GSA or Nuke anymore...

At the end of the day just get started on a few projects and fail. The unwritten rule of IM is failure, you can read all you want here, but to make real money you're going to just have to do it. If IM was that easy everyone would be making bank, you're going to go through a few learning curves, and lose all your work at somepoint. It's just part of the game, because the next time you won't make that same mistake. And you'll get better and better at IM in general.

I have found a few tutorials, but I am still learning this websites layout. It's a little different / more custom than other forums I have been on before. I know things will take work to get anywhere, I dont expect to buy an eBook and make $200 in a week like some people seem to think Thanks for the info though, appreciate it.
 
If you want to go completely whitehat - you need to produce your own content (written, videos, PR, social media) and head down the PPC World ...... the odds of being successful with limited knowledge are really low .. PPC is something on its own that requires really specific experience and budget... and can lose you money if your not careful.

All the sites you aspire to be? They eat, sleep and breathe Blackhat. Stop listening to Google's scare team.
 
Even if you create links manually, it isn't white hat. The very fact that you are 'building' links implies that you are trying to game the search engine.

If you're thinking white hat then you really should be trying to build site(s) that people will find amazing and would love to share. Any other white hat 'method' isn't really going to be purely white hat.
 
I totally agree with you. I was doing the same..making backlinks from the same Ip but now I am giving more importance to share on social networks, so that people share my links
 
Stop worrying about whitehat/blackhat stuff and build good quality backlinks. Social bookmarks, web2.0s, article directories and blog posts should help you start ranking somewhere on Google. Go for authority sites to get backlinks from to start with. Pay particular attention to your anchor texts, do not over optimize your webpages.
 
A lot of good advice has been given. I definitely agree that you just need to pick a method and test it out for yourself.

That is what I try to accomplish in my SEO Experiments blog. I detail out in every post the initial rankings, and eventual ranking increase/decrease after testing a current SEO strategy.

i guess it is better to concentrate more on quality content, on site seo and social networks. I can't guarantee how this way will work for you. But I am doing pretty quality guest blogging on high PR and relevant sites. It will really help to rank my site and boost Google's Plus authorship.
 
create links as clean as you can! Google loves diversified and "natural" looking links! Your job is to fool the google bots and make them realise the links you have to your money site are "natural" even if you made them using any software!
