How the hell do you get a job as a developer?

I feel like unless I go to college, I have no shot at getting a remote work from home job as a developer despite me having numerous skills. I am passionate about PHP, JS, HTML / CSS, Front-End and can do almost anything on WordPress + willing to learn other languages. I am from the United States. I've been posting applications on all major websites for hiring but my applications nearly get denied immediately, and rarely do I ever make it to interview.

(Automated Declines) so what am I supposed to do? Up until now I've built my own sites, and grown my own income base this way, with the occasional freelance project. But I just had a baby.. I am trying to make something more stable, and everyone is declining me without seeing my skills, even tho I've curated a portfolio of 20-30 sites that are online, and active that I did the work for. I feel like this would be a good forum to ask people, as some of you guys maybe have been in this same boat before.

The thing is, I feel like I literally get instantly declined when applying for jobs. I'm not talking about freelance, I am talking about actual jobs. I am offering my services for what I felt was reasonable.. and in california MC Donalds employee makes more than what I am offering, still not accepted.
 
Yesterday, I watched a video on the impact of Ai to the job market. Based on a source they provided (which I can't exactly recall the name of the source), the first category of jobs listed that will be affected are developers/coders. And I've seen numerous advises in the past months that web developers should have a second alternative.

60% of jobs in developed countries like the U.S, will be affected by Ai in the next 2 years. While 40% jobs will be affected by Ai worldwide.

This means getting a job as a developer will prove difficult in coming years. Most companies want to hire or outsource cheap from developing countries like India or they prefer to use Ai I guess.

They also mentioned that Artificial intelligence will create 300 million jobs, that's the side you want to be. This include creating Ai apps and any other other thing related to Ai.

Ok so is this your 1st job you're applying to or you have past job experience mentioned & still your application is not being considered?

If it's later then I guess other applicants might have better experience than you.

I remember applying for over 100 jobs in 2 months, getting interviewed but no calls after that.

It was back in 2008 global recession time and I was a fresher.

I've been working on learning "Ai" from the development angle. However, I think that this statistic also means the jobs created by people who become prompt engineers for whatever field it may be. I agree that this will be the future of webdevelopment on its own. | Especially with how well Ai is already at determining concept -> framework.

I am most definitely considered ahead of the curve when it comes to prompt engineering, maybe this is something I should consider a job for instead. Curating prompts, the benefit businesses, or just overall using chatgpt to solve tasks from non programming job cultures.

A good solution :- Learn how to create good landing pages for niches like weight loss, iphone buy etc.
Answer Questions here in BHW. Create a good profile. Check services that other developers are providing. Buy Jr. VIP Membership. Create your own Service thread e,g, provide landing pages etc.

Start Slow and you will eventually start getting orders.

* 20-30 sites is great, but showcase the most impressive, complex ones. Think about building a couple of projects specifically to highlight skills relevant to the jobs you're targeting.

* A solid GitHub profile with clean, well-documented code speaks volumes about your abilities.

* Client Testimonials:If you've done freelance, get glowing testimonials to add social proof.

Personalize every application, never use copy paste... address customer's questions, show related qualifications, etc.
20-30 portfolio is overwhelming for customer if you show them all, just show 5 of your best (and related to customer's project).

You can apply for remote jobs. If you want to get the best jobs you need to have command over some programming language and then have a diverse portfolio that happens to help as many businesses as possible this will help you to attract clients.
 
I understand completely your frustration but don't believe the reddit guys that claim to easily make 100K year working 3 hours per day as DEV, they are all BS and trolling. It is simply not true.

Companies will NOT pay 10K per month so easily. A DEV working 5 hours per day answering support tickets, at the end of the day probably makes the company 1000 bucks with luck. The company will NOT pay them 10K per month, otherwise they will go broke after a few months. It's simply not reliable.
 
You are 15 years late.

5 years ago was the last train to hop onto. But that train is 300 applicants on one position now. And if you win such a position, you might get median + 30% increase but usually only median.

Due to extreme interest, you'll be easily replaced so your work will be stressful as they will be able to load you with infinite number of task. Basically they'll play scarcity tricks on you.

Today your only way to make something off that is to be either extremely hard working (not possible if you're not rich already) or build your own company.

There are so many talented people in this field that I would be probably on position no. 100 if I applied. So I would be in the last 99th percentile.

There are Harvard level mathematicians. People who write their own compilers and stuff. People who can write a genetic algorithm on their phone. It's crazy. If you don't have talent like they do, competing with them will be hell and you will quit.


Imo a smarter move would be to get another job and just live frugally. If you need more money, just work extra hours.

If you have a kid, problems shouldn't be problems. I heard people with children get magical powers and can hop over obstacles like nobody else. :D

If you had such a talent in any other field, you'd be seen as a genius. Here it's normal. :)

If someone believes.what Reddit on Quora says, they should get a check with a doctor.

Most of these answers on Reddit and Quora are bots that some black hat person created and they just post random shit.

You'll find Bill Gates posting himself on Quora and such things.

I like this response, it’s truthful and to the point. I sort of agree with you, and with that I’ve been wondering what other paths I can go to potentially make revenue.

I thought about things such as welding, opening a physical store, creating a business that specializes in niche products.

There’s just too many overwhelming factors.
