I've been to multiple tech/networking forums and I can't find a working solution. Netgear can't help me because this is a refurbished piece of shit that Time Warner gives you.

Ok so out of nowhere (I'm on someone else's computer right now) my adapter won't connect to the internet. It says "Local Area Connection" Doesn't Have A Valid IP Configuration.

I've tried the following: Powercycling the modem, Renewing/Releasing the IP, Restarting and Uninstalling the Network adapter multiple times, Restarting the computer, I even did a clean reboot of the computer back to factory condition, I've tried looking for the "Bonjour" service or ID_Stringxxx that people recommend doing and nothing.

I'm out of solutions and who ever can solve this wins $100.

Edit: This is a my-computer issue only.. it's done this before but only for a couple hours.. then one of the many restarts I did just fixed it.. but this one has been going for an entire day now.

Easy, make the modem back to factory defaults.
There is always a hiden hole where you can insert a slim object and press the buttom to make it reset to default settings.

Please note that I dont garantee it will work with your adsl/cable provider... some modems need to be pre-conf to make it work on the ISP network.

Yep, have done that. This modem doesn't have a reset to factory default in it's User Interface so I've given that a shot, I've powercycled it.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

The problem is that you factory reset it with the button. Therefore I needs to be reconfigured to work with your ISP. Sorry :(

Hi,

Can you tell me the router's model number?

Reply by Pm if possible.

If you use windows, download winsockfix, it'll reset your network setting. It help me several times.

Easy...well...maybe....

try this...

  1. Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.
  2. Right-click the connection that you want to change, and then click Properties. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Click the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click either Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and then click Properties.
  4. To specify IPv4 IP address settings, do one of the following:
    • To obtain IP settings automatically, click Obtain an IP address automatically, and then click OK.
    • To specify an IP address, click Use the following IP address, and then, in the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
  5. To specify IPv6 IP address settings, do one of the following:
    • To obtain IP settings automatically, click Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, and then click OK.
    • To specify an IP address, click Use the following IPv6 address, and then, in the IPv6 address, Subnet prefix length, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.

i actually had this problem not long ago with a friends comp...the connection was there, it was showing as connected with signal strength excellent, after i did this it zoomed in...

Check whether Tcp/Ip V6 is enabled on your NIC settings - that might be the problem.

So you cant connect to the router?

Or if your pc that cant connect to anything, go to run or search in the start bar, type cmd, in the cmd prompt type: ipconfig /release -press enter- then type: ipconfig /renew -press enter-

If its a router not connecting to the modem problem, i could help with that.

Thanks for the solution guys but I've tried all of these.

I've disabled Tcp/Ip v6 before. No effect.
Yes I have a router.. it's a refurbished Netgear WCG814WG router that Time Warner gives you.

Dillfly2000, I've done renewing and releasing the IP.

Do this but follow the instructions to set a static IP in v4... Set your IP address to 192.168.1.(any number between 10 and 200), leave subnet mask to whatever it defaults to, and set your gateway and dns servers to your routers ip

If its a router to modem problem, try using the setup wizard in netgears CP, and in basic setting choose no under Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?

That's only if your modem connects independently to the isp.

you may have to enter the static ip and dns information if its not automatically placed.

*sigh* I'm on a chat line with Time Warner but I should have known before hand this would be a dead end...

How these idiots function every day on their own is beyond me. They just go through the basic steps even though I covered that in my first question and told him every thing I've tried.

Hmmm... I was suspecting the problem will be with DHCP... but since you have restted both your PC and the modem, it seems unlikely...

I had once encountered a similar issue... It turneed out that the Ethernet port at the back of my CPU wasnot working properly...
Just test it with any other Computer... if it doesn't work on anyother computer too, it means your ethernet port is fine!.

The next thing is: Your software in PC is ********ed up! [By software I men OS, which might have settings which do not allow DHCP to work properly]
OR
Your Modem/Router is ********ed up!
But I still suspect the issue related to DHCP as the no valid Ip error suggests me so..
