How the hell do I do proper keyword research?

I wrote my keyphrase in google keywords and got 300k average hits a month.

Keyword tracker tool gave me completely different numbers, usually 100x times lower. Which tool to use, how do I find the best keywords to focus on?

I personally use market samurai. Just get the trial, when it expires you just won't be able to use the other features like SEO competition anymore (which IMO you don't really need, you can get other programs that do this better like SEO firefox plugin). BTW, you are keeping phrase, broad, and exact keywords in mind, right? the exact keyword weight loss will have different stats then the broad keyword weight loss
 
What keywords are your competition focusing on? Start with focusing on the sites on the first page of search results. You only need to knock out one, so find the weakest site and focus on beating it. You figure this out by knowing what the top three sites are doing that the number ten site is not doing.

For indexing purposes you want to focus on low hanging fruit (the least competitve/less traffic keywords). Using LSI keywords for article writing is a great way to get indexed quickly--and highly--for your low traffic keywords). How do you intend to promote your site? How is the number ten site being promoted? Feel free to PM me with more details for additional suggestions...
 
I want to do this for my autoblog. I have a niche but I can not understand the actual amount of searches as I said, google keywords is telling me one thing and wordtracker something completely opposite.
 
Don't get too hung up on the number of keyword search results, because various tools will provide various results. If you believe this is a profitable niche, the key is to find the keywords that the sites that are better ranked are optimizing. Use the google adwords keyword tool to enter the top site urls to find the keywords that google believes are relevant. Start promoting your site...

Is the seo firefox plugin free?
 
Google the 30 day challenge. Ed Dale does an excellent job describing keyword research. If you are a visual learner, then this will be great for you. It's on Youtube.

The difference in numbers is because WordTracker grabs it's data from a couple of Meta search engines like Dogpile which only has a small fraction of data compared to Google and these little engines have a different userbase.

Then they guess Google's search volume and times their data by that factor, so any errors are magnified. It's possible to spam WordTracker results so a term looks like it gets more searches and people wind up optimizing for it.

I rely mostly on log files by seeing what terms bring traffic "and" convert, then expand on those, add modifiers etc. Not all keywords/traffic is equal, if some term brings 10k a month and they just browse around and leave for me it's a negative because they just wasted my bandwidth.

But with auto-blogs, most will be "one off" long-tail keyphrases. So as imfh said, don't get too hung up on keywords just keep pushing out content, check your logs and see what's doing well and push out more of the same.
 
wow good topic im so confused on this also im going to try the market samuri i hope that help me i was wanting to use keyword elite but cant seem to get the software but i need something i know there's a difference between buyer key words and shopping keywords but you can spend hours trying to decide if you are picking the right keyword ....well just my to cents good thread
 
I think its better to write all possible related keywords on a page and then check which top 4 or may be 5 keywords are best among them. seobook.com will provide you last 24 hour searches of any keyword you enter plus related searches to that keyword. You can also search the density of any keyword from google adwords KeywordToolExternal it will show you search density plus other keywords. I dont know more than this yet! :D
 
if you want to know the true daily searches, create adwords campaign for the keywords you want to check traffic for, and use exact match [exactmatch] which will then tell you daily impressions and is 100% correct.
 
wow i just checked out market samurai and man you guys rock this software is great thanks for recommending it to me you dont no how you have saved me this seems much better then trying to figure it out using google keyword tool cheers

Are you using wordtracker? If so, it gives you results on a daily basis that's why the discrepancies. Google keyword tool gives you monthly result. Sign up for wordtracker to find out more. They have a 7 day trial period and lots of free tutorials, pdf and videos. Goodluck.
 
i was wondering for the keyword research experts for your sites how many keywords do you usually use for each page of your site do you only use about 10 or do you stuff as many keywords as possible would love to know what some of the experts think thanks
 
I think Market Samurai is the best tool out there and in combination with Google Keyword Tool can do wonders ..:) .. As far as looking a way to do a proper keyword research i recommend you to get Commission Blueprint and watch the videos..
 
I will say from my experience... You never know If the keyword tracker has accurate search results.

Only way to know is it worth using keyword is actually trying to rank for it.
Make BH site with all of the keywords. Drop backlinks (If more searches then drop more bh backlinks - they could be guestbooks, comment spamming anything that gives some juice)
Track every visitors and see which keywords generate you traffic.

Site may go down after a month but atleast then you will know be sure is it worth building WH site
