How the HELL are these guys targeting me on Facebook? This is crazy!

You guys are idiots. FB disabled this option.
This shirt company just sends the same ad out to 1B facebook users, and hopes the people with that name buy it.
Profit!

You're right about FB cracking down on ads that CALL OUT a user's name. However, you can still run these type of ads just like how you can run other types of niches that FB hates. Of course, this requires a little more creative thinking.

Yep that's a pretty good business model I'd say. No wonder they were able to get funded $20 million from a VC. :hmmmm2:

It's called Social Engineering

Not so impressive.

Anybody can make an add that displays on facebook with somebody's name

For example if I know that on Facebook there is alot of people .with the name Jessica hernandes than I'll make a couple
Of adds with that name..to grab their attention.

But Yea is not like they are targeting you.

I have had this happen to me, but not just using my name. It took my boyfriend's name and added it to a shirt that said "This girl loves her ______." (name of person in the blank). Somehow it accessed my relationship status and sent me ads. Both our profiles are private.

Facebook doesn't allow it but you can still manage to get your ads approved by playing it smart. for example, scrape 10k emails based on last/first name (or even both..) and then just add another 10-15k random dummy emails and you're good to go.

There's always a risk but if you're willing to take it that's how you do it.

That is insane. I wonder if you some how opted into another advertising partner which shared your info?

Damn its crazy that people are still coming out with new tools i dont think theres much left to try with fb ads.

It looks like some HTML and CSS being placed over the image, not part of the image itself. Depending on what type of scripting Facebook allows in their ads, they are probably doing some simple javascript to just scrape some page content such as your last name and place it there.

I don't advertise on Facebook but does anyone know if they offer anything similar to AdWords "dynamic keyword insertion" that would perhaps let advertisers personalize ads with user's names?

Download adblock and you won't have this problem again :)

Its not a problem, this is exactly why I don't run adblock. It is good to see what is out there and what people are doing to keep track of what is working!
