How the h*ll these people do this?

I'm pretty sure that's not something you can do. It's something that Google does automatically for established companies.
If you google Google's (lol) "Knowledge Graph" you'll see that they've created a bunch of new algorithms or something that condenses information for commonly searched terms & clicks links and displays the information in the upper-right corner. So I guess the only way that you could actually have it for your site is if you were already popular to begin with
In other words, you can't promote your website with this, as you already need to be extreeeeemely well established.

As mentioned before, Google's algorithm automatically gathers info from sites like Wikipedia. This is mainly used for mobile phone. For example, when you use Google voice search or Siri is pulls up the scraped information. This makes for a faster and smoother search flow.

For a start you need to get Google authorship sorted and put as much detail / info as you can in the profile including address / phone etc. Absolutely no guarantee it will display and Google instruct you of that at the time, but I'm sure with some clever G+ social engineering you can get something to work. (It's something I'm trying to nail myself too!)

I thought the knowledge box had to do with using rel=publisher, although I am not 100% sure. I think it is similar in essence to getting sitelinks under your SERP listing, in that all you can do is make an honest effort to boost your chances but not necessarily guarantee getting anything listed.

I'm surprised by all the junk in this thread.
That's not the knowledge graph and yes, that is partly something Google does automatically but not very well if your site isn't linked correctly. This an authorship image using an author tag. To get it to work fairly quickly You'll need a Google + account which is linked to your site with the 'authorship' tag on your site. Fairly simple to do with a wordpress authorship plugin.

Exactly. It's about authorship. In fact one of the messages you get from Google when your authorship is set up shows you an example of how you will look (with the info box on top right) if they choose to display it. One of my sites has the author image in the SERP but doesn't show the big info box. That is the site I'm trying to see if there's a set way to engineer that. I don't think it's as straight-forward as getting the image under the entry in the SERP though.
