How should I market?

I am in the financial industry and I sell investment products.

In order for me to do business, I have to meet the clients in person and spend some good time with them.

I am at a point where I lack leads at times...

So my question is.. what would you guys suggest as some marketing techniques that I can use to market in my city.. I am in Canada so the CAN-Spam law limits the Email marketing.

What other sources can I use to market?

As a former member of the same industry, referrals are your number one method for attracting new potential clients. You can also provide informative/educational tools to attract visitors to your website where they can learn more about you. Your investment firm should provide you with tools or methods for finding qualified leads.

Finally, getting involved with groups of other client-based individuals is a great resource. For example, groups where you may find lawyers, real estate agents, insurance agents, etc. There's usually a business/professionals forum in your area. They tend to be a scratch-my-back and I'll scratch yours.

As for electronic (and especially blackhat) methods, to be 100% honest with you, I think you'd be spending a lot of effort (and money) for little result.

Is there any search volume for super long tail keywords related to your products? Ie, "income protection insurance for contractors Toronto"? I suggest those are your golden opportunities, both because they're relatively easy to rank for, and because the people searching are either considering the product, or have already decided they need it.

The best conversion you will get comes from providing very valuable information, in long form, on your website. If you write unique pieces about the different products, in-depth, and from unique angles, and try to include original research or unique data, you'll get the traffic, and you'll convert the traffic.
A good example of this is lawyers - they will often publish a paper regarding a particular court case or a new law, and the effect it has. People searching for that topic or that case will find the paper, read the paper, and decide that the lawyer who wrote it is their best bet for dealing with the situation, and they'll pick up the phone and call them.

I suspect that in your industry, a mere 5-10 incoming leads a month would make a significant difference to your commission check - so don't let small search volumes discourage you. 25 keywords each with 30 searches a month is enough to build a significant income in your business.

Are you saying I should build a brand new page with long tail keywords as heading and write about them? Or simply just optimize around LTK's?

What do you suggest I do if I want to target search phrases like the example you provided?

Each longtail or its group should have their own target page for added relevancy and easier ranking power.

If you're working in the financial services industry, there is no better way to promote yourself than by attending professional networking events. Financial planners/advisors are a dime a dozen here in the US, and assuming the same is true in CA, you'll need to get your face out there.

TBH there's only an incremental gain you will make in your business via online strategies. Polish up your Linked in page and make sure when people google your name everything comes up clean. Other than that, this is one of the most traditional industries out there today and you must spend your time and resources accordingly.
