How should I go about creating this site?

I have an idea to create a site in self-help niche. The site would have many different categories in it (confidence, dating, motivation etc). I want to create a long term project that would be a solid money maker in the long run. What is holding me back is that I don't know how to present myself while doing the site. I feel like if I start writing articles about self-help then I should be authority on that matter and for this to work I need to have a big persona and experience in the field etc.

In reality, I am mostly interested about the subject because I want to help myself via learning it. So, I am not an authority but very interested in the subject. I have already learned tons of stuff about self-help and I am probably, in theory, a lot more knowledgeable than the average Joe is.

How do you suggest me to go about creating this site? How should I present myself and also, how to monetize it? I have thought about different affiliate products but should I keep them as banners on the site randomly or..? I would not want to promote some specific book throughout the site (I would if it was my own) and I feel I don't have enough knowledge yet to put together a solid book myself.

So, what do you suggest me to do? Thanks!

I don't want to compete with LifeHacker. I just want to get my piece of the pie. I would be using social media for traffic also so SEO competition is not important atm.

To be honest, the quality of posts on Lifehacker has been really depleting these days. I think so many of these big names (even tech blogs like TechCrunch) are just churning out articles for the sake of getting more attention. Then create controversial topics with less research and come up with irrelevant conclusions. Sometimes you wonder if these articles are even proofread.

You should probably write as yourself. This is because of the following reasons:

1. This gives the impression that you're human just like them - you have problems like your readers, but you did something to overcome them. You'll be like an inspiration.

2. It's a long term project anyway, so you'll be an authority in due time.

You should probably take a look at danoah.com. It's an authority site closely related to self help. I've watched the author of this blog start from a .blogspot blog to a being an author of 2 books (at the time I stopped reading his post). He's making money through his site now.

I recommend that you do not do this. A broad site will be much harder to rank than a focused one.

If yuo are going to do this, plan on spending a lot of time and silo the site.

Thanks for the advice but like I said, I won't be using Google to get traffic, I will get traffic from social media.
