How realistic is it, really?

excellent responses! making $ online isnt overnite, so just because uve been reading for 3 years doesnt mean youve been implementing for that long and trying a tactic for one week and saying it doesnt work and moving on to the next isnt really trying. im no expert and everydays a battle, i mix it up, iming, ebay, swap meets, i design websites for friends. but i am only telling you this cause i was the same way, reading ebooks and info all day and try a new tactic every other day. you have to be consistent. i am also from ny or was as of last year so yeah i know how expensive it is. get a roommate or move in with a friend, get a part time job but i refuse to give up on making a living from iming! i wish you luck bro! make an action plan and stick to it! to get by also i suggest you do article writing, sucks but it would suck more to go flip burgers, take care and chin up!

You made the mistake by quitting your job and going straight into IM without any financial stability. I recommend you to find a job and do IM as a side thing.

This is the key. I tried every method posted here. And made nothing. It was not until I started creating my own methods, that I started to make money.

You have to come up with something of your own to really make money. And it's not all about ranking a site #1 on google. There are many other ways to make money.

Absolutely. I make 90% of my money from cloaked / redirected doorway pages which is something that most people will try to tell you doesn't work any more. Most of them don't rank #1 for anything and I don't even try to make them rank #1. You've got to blaze your own path that works for you.

Yup likewise here, my own method, which I spent quite a lot of time formulating. I'm pretty certain no one else (or very few) are doing anything similar in whole. Sure people have done the "portions" but not the entire thing I think.

Implemented this method at the start of this year, I now make a nice 5 figure monthly income and growing.

If you can find a method that only you (or few) are doing, thats unique in some way, doesnt have to be totally unique, just the implementation, then you've found a BlackHat niche WITHIN whatever niche you are targetting.

I believe this is the best advice out there. BHW will drain your soul if you spend to much time reading up on new methods and how others are succeeding while you continue to fail. I bought one tool and stuck to learning it. Made me $300 last month! (Record-Breaking!)

Also started my own niche site in which I hope to make 100+ (or even 1000+) pages with. Either create CPA sites, affiliate sites, or adsense sites! Go with making a passive income empire! Or whatever works for you! Just pick the method that appeals to you the most and stick with it.

This is a great point and I've had a similar experience. I started working on IM approximately 18 months ago and have only recently seen much success with a few things. Expect to fail, work hard (just as BassTrackerBoats said earlier) and keep learning OP!

I got Kicked out of my house for 6 months because no one liked what I was doing.Had to move around alot .slept on couches.whatever but I kept my head in it and kept thinking - You cant quit man.no one here is better than you.but realistically you do have to have some intelligence to do this.but that doesnt mean you cant make decent money.

Everyday there is great inspirational TRUE stories on here.you just have to make the right choices.

Taking a break to clear the air isn't a stupid idea you know. Go to central park watch people, study them with a online making money eye. What do they do, what do they like, what do they think, how do they behave ? Maybe you'll have a click which trigger a nice idea .

Get your self a break from online and go outside. To have ideas you need a clear mind.

SUbscribe to fiverr, sell ebay stuff from things you can buy cheap online, and work into a white hat business to get things going.

you've been around here a year and you have less than 50 posts, thats your problem right there. instead of just reading these forums start asking questions about stuff you don't know, everyone here is helpful and there is great information.

You just aren't trying enough ..... It's impossible to not make money within 3 years .... And get your job back .... You can quit when you make more than enough in IM to be able to live ....

Making money is very easy, i can do money in almost everything and i could be rich already if would want to, i'm a person who likes self-learning and i want to learn atleast dozen methods that works before i stick with one, so when i'm done with that i have good flow to move to another... But i think i have done my self-learning part for now and i'm doing my first project which i'm going to bank for, after it thrives i will go to... maybe youtube and clickbank... this first project will nurture and validate my information about SEO so i will do great in upcoming projects.

OP, you have to validate stuff you have learned here by taking action!

I don't mean to be rude or anything but do you know how many people on this board have it worst off than you?
I am a college graduate have a bachelors in computer science. In my country I can work for a goddamn slave driver for around $600 a month as a Java developer or I can remain unemployed and work on IM. And Im very very lucky as employment for programmers come real easy. My friend is a master of economics he works for $400 a month without health insurance and without pension benefits for a boss that humiliates him and abuses him. Don't think life here is cheap a gallon of gas costs $7.50.
Do we give up? No. Did we blow our brains out? No.
I lived through a damn war watched people loose their families and watched people go insane (Yes one of my best friends lost his senses).

/END RANT begin advice.

If you can't get that winning idea by yourself why don't you try offering a service. Download dragon naturally speaking from the download section on this site FOR FREE. Get a microphone and start writing articles (Speaking articles to be more exact). Undercharge to begin with a native english speaker for 0.70c or even a $1 eventualy per 100 words would be a bargain.
Here is what I would do if I was you. Look for threads that offer micro niche sites PM each and every one of those people offering your article writing service. Undercharge at first, make them a real good deal as most will be orderind in bulk and on a regular basis. With every article you write look-up the keywords in google adwords tool. Brainstorm think about how you could monetize those sites.
You will be making money and you will be learning. You will be seeing how people think. You will be in contact with people who know their stuff (to me that's more important than anything). Most people here will be more than happy to help especially if you provide a good service.
After a while you will learn proper keyword research. You will know how to write good articles and you will start finding your own niches. And have some money saved up. Start some low competition keyword sites of your own get some passive income and once you have your basic needs settled you can then wait for that big break we're all waiting for. Or maybe you can expand your service and build your business model around that?

To answer your question NO you don't have to be above average intelligence to be a success in IM.
Some of us are extremely intelligent, some of us are lucky, some of us have more money to invest, some of us have friends to help us along, and some of us work so hard that failure is not an option. This is a job just like any other job. IM is a subset of real life and you should treat it as such. I have learned this much about life in these 32 years you have to have heart and have soul to be a winner. Nothing and I do mean nothing else is obligatory, not intelligence, not connections, not education, and not a rich mommy and daddy. Sure if you have any of those it's a bonus but without heart and soul you're doomed before you even started.
