The #1 ranked website on Google for my keyword term has over 60,000 backlinks and the domain was created in 2008. My domain was created a few months later and does not have any significant number of backlinks yet. Is it safe to use a software program to start building backlinks quickly on this "aged" domain to compete for the #1 spot?

Age does matter but you will get nice rankings but they won't fix you to the first page, no doubt you will reach there if you work hard but then you will fall afterwards.
